I found this definition ~

Definition: Hair bands were so named because of their use of makeup, teased hair, and oddball costumes. Songs were almost always about sex, drugs, and the supernatural.

Also Known As: Hair Metal, Glam Metal

Examples: Mötley Crüe, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Guns n’ Roses

Hmmmm. So makeup and teased hair appear to be critical parts of the definition. Van Halen still fits though.

I don't consider Iron Maiden hair metal. They were a power metal band. They also were a NWOBHM band.

I won't accept an "argument from authority" consisting of nothing but examples. The authorities must also provide a clearcut objective definition of "hair band" applicable in all cases.

IMHO

Van Halen was an early influence on what would become "hair bands".

Hair bands have at least two distinctions. One is obviously the look of full teased out hair and spandex. But there was also a definable sound that got attached to the genre in the mid 80's. Pop metal.

IMO VH cultivated and developed the look and the sound of "hair bands" as their career progressed. But like any sub genre - the originators are always the coolest. IMO VH was one of the best hair bands.

I agree with this completely. To me Van Halen brought 2 new things to metal that would become essential parts of hair metal: positivity and keyboards. What metal band ever smiled when they performed before VH and sang about partying and having fun...it was mostly dark, negative stuff (e.g., circles and rings and dragons and kings). And before the album 1984 I don't really think the synthesizer was an acceptable instrument in metal (organs were of course with Deep Purple).

And as too the original poll VH is a million times better than Bon Jovi IMHO.
