Exclamation Re: Van Halen vs. Bon Jovi - the battle of the hair bands!

I found this definition ~

Definition: Hair bands were so named because of their use of makeup, teased hair, and oddball costumes. Songs were almost always about sex, drugs, and the supernatural.

Also Known As: Hair Metal, Glam Metal

Examples: Mötley Crüe, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Guns n’ Roses

Yow!!! He/she certainly isn't very photogenic. Makeup, more makeup I say!

Hmmmm. So makeup and teased hair appear to be critical parts of the definition. Van Halen still fits though.

I don't consider Iron Maiden hair metal. They were a power metal band. They also were a NWOBHM band.

I won't accept an "argument from authority" consisting of nothing but examples. The authorities must also provide a clearcut objective definition of "hair band" applicable in all cases.

Metalpriest:

Let's move this over to the thread that's been started on the definition of a "hair band". Later.

I never thought that...................ever.
Were they not an eighties band? Did they not have long hair? Did they not have a lead singer who jumped around the stage like a monkey? Case closed.

Do you consider Iron Maiden a "Hairband"? They were big in the 80s, They had long hair, and when I saw them Bruce Dickinson jumped around on stage....well like a monkey I guess. Just wonderin'
A band with long hair doesn't make it a typical "hairband"..Maiden wasn't a hairband and still isn't.

Was Metallica??

Well I guess the WHO were a hair band cause they had long hair and three of them jumped around the stage like monkey's too.

Learn to tell the difference Hound, cause you're WAY off here...

oh..case re-opened..
Exactly! Van Halen isn't a hair band and never was. Time to go back to the sixties forum for him. Or, should that be the fifties? Oh wait, there isn't one here!

Some examples of hair bands: Motley Crue, Poison, Cinderella

VH has never been a hair band but it would be the better of the two

So David Lee Roth isn't flouncing about on stage and playing with his hair like a woman in this video?

Re: Van Halen vs. Bon Jovi - the battle of the hair bands!

IMHO

Van Halen was an early influence on what would become "hair bands".

Hair bands have at least two distinctions. One is obviously the look of full teased out hair and spandex. But there was also a definable sound that got attached to the genre in the mid 80's. Pop metal.

IMO VH cultivated and developed the look and the sound of "hair bands" as their career progressed. But like any sub genre - the originators are always the coolest. IMO VH was one of the best hair bands.

I agree with this completely. To me Van Halen brought 2 new things to metal that would become essential parts of hair metal: positivity and keyboards. What metal band ever smiled when they performed before VH and sang about partying and having fun...it was mostly dark, negative stuff (e.g., circles and rings and dragons and kings). And before the album 1984 I don't really think the synthesizer was an acceptable instrument in metal (organs were of course with Deep Purple).

And as too the original poll VH is a million times better than Bon Jovi IMHO.

Re: Van Halen vs. Bon Jovi - the battle of the hair bands!

Considering that I can't STAND Bon Jovi- I go with Van Halen/Hagar.
