A common sentiment which is why Three Dog Night has been rarely discussed on this board. As a result finding a band from the same time period against which I could match Three Dog Night was rather difficult.

While I'm not a really big fan of Three Dog Night, I find many of their releases pleasant enough. The jazzy, brassy sound of Blood, Sweat & Tears actively annoys me though. Which is why my pick here is Three Dog Night, by a mile!

You could easily have compared BST and Chicago...both in the same type of genre.....3 Dog was always pop rock to me...but they did have a few decent radio songs.

No. I dismissed that pairing from consideration because Chicago would have won in a walk. The trusty chart book which I keep at hand shows that Chicago had 21 Top Forty hits between 1970 and 1985 while Blood, Sweat & Tears had only 5 between 1969 and 1975. I don't promote such mismatches. They make for poor polls.

Agreed. BS&T had a little head start on CTA (especially if you were from the NYC area.) I was in high school when Chicago came out and at that time BS&T was clearly the favorite. As time went on BS&T started to drift and Chicago became more rock solid and the rest is history,

Same genre is an irrelevant consideration when I surmise that one band would get sixteen votes out of twenty cast. I like polls to be close. A secondary consideration is that I like to see at least a bit of overlap in the years when the bands were most commercially successful.

I don't think same genre is irrelevant..I think it's the whole point....;in that case why not have a poll comparing The Monkees to Jimi Henridx or say....Abba to Led Zeppelin...?

Re: Blood, Sweat & Tears vs. Three Dog Night!

Both those polls would be fine from the standpoint of providing a real choice between two dramatically different bands. What prevents me from signing those bands to meet in the ring is I anticipate an all too one-sided result.

I'd be happy to match Pink Floyd against Led Zeppelin though, but it's been done and probably more than once. Like I say, putting up polls requires a bit of thought:

1. The match-up should be new and different.
2. The outcome can't be obvious (to me anyway).
3. I like some amount of chronological overlap between the bands. Same era is of some importance to me; same genre is not.
