A Hazy Shade of Winter by Simon & Garfunkel was released as a single on 22 October 1966 and peaked at #13 on the Billboard charts:

The Bangles' cover was released in November 1987 and got to #2 on the charts:

And here they are performing it live in 2010:

Check out MILF Susanna Hoffs! She truly did get better with age.

Re: Covers that are better than the originals!

The Simon and Garfunkel track made me think of this...I haven't played this for some time ..I have the original of course being a prog nut. Not sure how anyone could best S and G at their own game but truly a great version.

Anyone Who Had a Heart by Dionne Warwick was released in November 1963:

A very similar though somewhat screechy cover by Cilla Black was released 31 January 1964 and was a #1 hit sensation for three weeks in a row in the United Kingdom:

Another very similar cover by Atomic Kitten was released in 2008:

They clearly didn't have a clue though as to live delivery of the song. I mean smiling and wiggling when they were supposed to be pouring their hearts out? Whoever coached them on delivery should have been flogged. Well they were pretty anyway....

Here the Kinks covered their own tune and absolutely destroyed their original!

The initial version of I'm Not Like Everybody Else was released on 3 June 1966 as the flip side of the Sunny Afternoon single:

A live version was included on the Kinks' live LP To the Bone that was released in the U.S.A. in 1996:

The live version is just far more intense!

Let It All Hang Out by the Hombres was released in 1967:

A cover was included on John Cougar Mellencamp's LP Big Daddy released on 9 May 1989:

I don't think that Mellencamp's cover was musically superior, but the promo video for the track was a cut above.

Doing research for this thread I learned that this great tune was released way back in 1956!

Wow! Mickey and Sylvia's delivery was smoking hot! Nor has it ever been topped. Here though is a video with enhanced audio:

Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon by Neil Diamond was released in March 1967 and got to #10 on the Billboard Hot 100:

A cover by Urge Overkill was contained on their Stull EP released in 1994:

Urge Overkill's version gained considerable notoriety when it was included in the Pulp Fiction movie from 1994.

I really like them both.

I know you are a Green fan so I'm not rating which is 'better'...I like the Santana version better but that's just me. They are both brilliant guitarists.

Moon River was composed by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer for Audrey Hepburn to sing in the 1961 movie Breakfast at Tiffany's. As such the track won an Academy Award for "Best Original Song". It was also released as a single in October 1961 and won the 1962 Grammy Awards for "Record of the Year" and "Song of the Year":

The Henri Mancini's Orchestra's version reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 late in 1961:

Jerry Butler's cover also got to #11 late in 1961:

A cover by Andy Williams was included on his 1962 LP Moon River and Other Great Movie Themes which reached #3 on the album charts:

None of these versions exactly rocked of course. But check out the live version Jeff Beck rendered with Eric Clapton's assistance in Toronto in 2010:

Pork Pie Hat is actually one of the many Jeff Beck recordings that illustrates why he's typically been much better playing in someone else's band instead of as a solo artist. Left to his own devices, he all too often forgets to rock.

^It's a jazz song..a classic from Mingus....if Beck made it 'rockier' it would become a Led Zep track......geeesh,,,

Admittedly jazz leaves me limp.
