Re: George Harrison vs Keith Richards

Well, Keith's still alive, so he has that going for him.

But seriously, I voted Harrison. Keith has a cool guitar lick. It's so cool, he plays it in every song. He's good at what he does, but it's pretty limited.

Harrison's guitar skills were rudimentary in the beginning of the Beatles' recording career, but he eventually developed his own distinctive style, especially on slide. George gets my vote.

I have always felt that Keith was overrated. The underrated guitarists in the Stones (compared to Keith) were Brian Jones and Mick Taylor.

I appreciate them both but I gotta go with George for his versatility and minimalist yet amazing approach to serving the song.

That's a lot though!

I'm not sure who's better, but Keith has certainly been the more influential guitarist.

Re: George Harrison vs Keith Richards

I'm going with Keith Richards.

I read his book "Life" and in it he explains what he did to develop a certain sound... none of which I could understand. But when he said he used a 5-string setup and some special tuning for certain songs, I began to listen to his playing a lot more carefully. He really does have a unique sound that took a lot to develop... more than you typically see in rock music.

Besides... I never thought of George Harrison as an exceptional guitarist. Hellofa songwriter, though!

George was great but he was a copier (Carl Perkins), Keith's style was original.

Keith has been liberally playing Chuck Berry licks for a lot longer than Harrison played Carl Perkins licks.

Started out that way but he later developed his own unique sound and style where George was more generic.

well like yourself I too have read Keith`s "Life" book which is an insightful read through out. I`ve also read a book on the Stones Studio/Live gear you may like to check out
