Why are CDs so expensive these days?

Go ahead and classify this as a rant but I would like your input on this subject. I don't like illegally downloading albums, but as of late, I have no choice. I love music and I enjoy listening to new albums, but I'm not willing to pay 15 bucks for a single disc. This confounded by the fact that most of the good albums are either no longer in print or are only available as $100 dollar imports.

How do you feel about the outrageous prices of CD?

Re: Why are CDs so expensive these days?

i agree, they are definitely too expensive. i mean, for a simple jewel case, minimal inserts and a CD with some music on it, 15 bucks is pretty steep.

Shop around. You shouldn't have to pay 15 bucks for most CDs. Amazon sells most for under 10. Same with Best Buy, unless it's a more obscure release.

Sorry, but seems like cd's are the same price today as they were 20 years ago. And much cheaper if you download from itunes.

Buy used cds. You're getting the same as new for about half the price.

Re: Why are CDs so expensive these days?

I read somewhere that the price of producing the average CD is about $2, so to pay even $13.99 is a markup of over 700%.

Sure, there are the other costs of promotion, distributing... but at this point there's no good reason for a CD to retail for more than $10.

Re: Why are CDs so expensive these days?

Well actually there is. For every profitable CD, there's five or ten losers. The record company has to recoup the expenses incurred in their loser acts through paying advancements and other costs they'll never recoup, so the big acts subsidize the poor selling acts through high priced CDs.

Re: Why are CDs so expensive these days?

That's why I almost never buy new CDs (except in rare occasions when I just HAVE TO HAVE IT!!!1), plus buying them online helps the price a lot.

I just stick to vinyl, they are so excessively cheap.

Re: Why are CDs so expensive these days?

With the € so strong over the $ in recent years it was cheaper for me to buy cds directly from the US than buying them here in Germany I´ve just ordered two cds from Swedish bands for $ 11,25 a piece from an US mailorder co. , if I had ordered them directly from the Swedish label they would have been $ 18.80- but all this is changing right now with the € on a steady decline ( with older bands/music I prefer to buy vinyl too or borrow cds from friends)

I don't know that I've ever payed $15 for a single CD. You need to look a little harder.

Re: Why are CDs so expensive these days?

The sad thing is that 15 bucks for a new-ish cd around here would be a good deal. If I could have the US prices on new cd/vinyl without the shipping I'd save a lot of money.

Keep this attitude and only Kiss and miley Cyrus cds would ever be in print. He's to all the poorly selling acts

Re: Why are CDs so expensive these days?

In the shops where I buy CDs they are never expensive, except for the new releases and a few bands like Pink Floyd, The Beatles. I don't pay more than 10 euros for a CD.

By the way, when I went to London last year I also bought some CDs at a very good price

Flea markets, garage sales and antique malls are a good source of used cd's.

Re: Why are CDs so expensive these days?

$10 and $15 isn't bad prices for a cd my problem is with the import cd's that are now over $20. I tend to look at it in bulk. Three cd's one for $5, $10, $20 means I got each for $11.66.

Re: Why are CDs so expensive these days?

I don't remember the last time I paid $15 for a single CD. You need some shopping skills, man.

I once paid $30 for a single CD, but it was back in 1997 and it was an import early music CD that I knew I'd never see again. But rock music? If it's $15 it'll be two or more discs with vintage live cuts and outtakes and maybe even a concert DVD or surround sound.

Re: Why are CDs so expensive these days?

I haven't paid more than $9.99 for a single CD is awhile. Someone else mentioned Best Buy and Amazon...they always have good deals.

Nevertheless, with the losses the record industry has incurred in the last few years, it's not surprising prices haven't come down at other retail outlets. They're apparently scrambling to make profits.

If it's any consolation, a lot of CDs released these days include links to extra downloads, DVDs and other value-added bonuses...
