1942 Paul McCartney is born James Paul McCartney in Allerton, Liverpool, England.

1963 Darren "Dizzy" Reed (keyboardist of Guns N' Roses) is born in Hinsdale, Illinois.

2011 Clarence Clemons, saxophone player in Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, dies at age 69 after suffering a stroke. He is replaced in the band by his nephew, Jake Clemons.

1969 The first of a three day Festival in Newport, California, featuring: Ike And Tina Turner, Marvin Gaye, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Byrds, The Rascals, Steppenwolf, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Janis Joplin, Johnny Winter, Eric Burdon and Love. A three day ticket cost $15 (£8.80). Hendrix received $125,000 for his appearance, at the time it was the highest fee ever paid to a rock act for a single appearance.

1954 Rock bassist Michael Anthony (of Van Halen, Chickenfoot) is born in Chicago, Illinois.

1960 John Taylor (bassist for Duran Duran) is born Nigel John Taylor in Solihull, Warwickshire, England. As well as co-founding Duran Duran he later achieves a second round of success in rock supergroup The Power Station.

1978 Foreigner releases Double Vision.

1980: The Eagles headlined the Texxas Jam at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Other acts on the bill included Foreigner, Cheap Trick, Sammy Hagar & April Wine.

1986: The Prince’s Trust Concert was held at Wembley Stadium in London featuring Paul McCartney, Elton John, Tina Turner, Dire Straits, Bryan Adams & Phil Collins.

1972 The first Stonehenge Free Festival was held at Stonehenge, England culminating on the summer solstice. Staged between 1972 and 1984, acts who have appeared include Hawkwind, Gong, Doctor and the Medics, Flux of Pink Indians, Buster Blood Vessel, Crass, Selector, Dexys Midnight Runners, Thompson Twins, The Raincoats, Amazulu, Wishbone Ash, Man, Benjamin Zephaniah, The Enid, Roy Harper, Jimmy Page, Ted Chippington, Zorch and Ozric Tentacles.

1979 Angus MacLise, Velvet Underground's first drummer died of tuberculosis aged 34. He quit the band in 1965.

2001 John Lee Hooker, American blues singer and guitarist died in his sleep aged 83. Had hits with 'Boom Boom', 'Dimples' and 'I'm In The Mood'. His songs have been covered by many artists including Cream, AC/DC, ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Van Morrison, The Yardbirds, The Doors and The White Stripes. He appeared and sang in the 1980 movie The Blues Brothers.

1969: The first Toronto Pop Festival was held at Varsity Stadium & featured Chuck Berry, Procol Harum, Johnny Winter, Steppenwolf & The Band.

1975: Elton John headlined a bill at London’s Wembley Stadium which also featured The Beach Boys, The Eagles, Rufus & future Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh.

1985: Motley Crue released their third album Theatre of Pain which went on to reach number six on the Billboard 200 Album Chart & sell four million copies in the U.S.

1947 Howard Kaylan (lead singer of The Turtles, Flo & Eddie) is born Howard Kaplan in the Bronx, New York.

1948 Todd Rundgren is born outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the '70s, he becomes a top solo artist and one of the most celebrated producers in music, with Meat Loaf's Bat Out Of Hell his biggest commercial success.

1957 Garry Beers (bass guitarist for INXS) is born in Manly, New South Wales, Australia.

1979 Neil Young releases his highly lauded live album, Rust Never Sleeps. It contains several new songs that go on to be Young favorites, including "Powderfinger," "My My, Hey Hey," and "Pocahontas."

1988 Robert Palmer releases "Simply Irresistible" in his native UK, where it peaks at #44. It fares much better in the US, where it lands at #2.

2004 Lynyrd Skynyrd releases Lynyrd Skynyrd Lyve: The Vicious Cycle Tour, their fifth live album. Featuring music from a July 11, 2003 performance at Antioch, Tennessee's Amsouth Amphitheater, it celebrates the band's thirty year anniversary.

2010 Lynyrd Skynyrd releases Live from Freedom Hall, their eight live album. It features music performed June 15, 2007 at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky.

2018 Pantera drummer and co-founder Vinnie Paul dies at 54.

1975 During his 'Welcome To My Nightmare' tour in Vancouver, Canada, Alice Cooper fell from the stage and broke six ribs.

2010 62-year-old Gregg Allman underwent a successful liver transplant operation at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. Allman had begun a series of treatments for Hepatitis C, but chronic damage of his liver led doctors to recommend a transplant. In a statement to the press, Allman said "I changed my ways years ago, but we can't turn back time. Every day is a gift."
