Back to an Even Bigger Garden: Massive Woodstock Box Set Planned for August

Massive 38-disc box includes nearly every note of music played during the festival’s three days in 1969 – but assembling old tapes and having musicians sign off 50 years later was a daunting task

Imagine hurtling yourself back in time to the original Woodstock festival in 1969, finding a good, relatively dry spot to chill, and settling in to hear more than three straight days of music. No, not possible, but the closest anyone may come to that experience will arrive this August. Pegged to the 50th anniversary of the event, Woodstock 50 — Back to the Garden — The Definitive 50th Anniversary Archive, a 38-disc box set, will include every note of music played at the festival (save for three songs), some of it released for the first time ever.

The box — which will also include a Blu-ray of Michael Wadleigh’s Woodstock movie, a guitar strap and a replica of the original program, among other items — will cost $799.

Flashback: Jimi Hendrix Breaks Down Iconic ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ Woodstock Performance

“I thought it was beautiful,” legendary guitarist tells talk show host Dick Cavett

Just one month after closing out Woodstock with a searing rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” Jimi Hendrix went onto The Dick Cavett Show to explain why he decided to reimagine the song. It’s seen today as one of the greatest moments of his career, but at the time some American were offended that his take on the song — which used squelching feedback to simulate the sound of exploding bombs — was a means to protest the Vietnam War.

“I don’t know, man,” an exhausted Hendrix told Cavett, shortly after admitting he had only slept eight minutes the night before. “I’m an American, so I played it. They made me sing it in school, so it was a flashback.”

Cavett informed the audience that Hendrix was once a member of the 101st Airborne Division, which should be considered when sending hate mail to the guitarist. “When you mention the national anthem and talk about playing it in any unorthodox way, you immediately get a guaranteed percentage of hate mail,” the talk show host said.

“It’s not unorthodox!” Hendrix told Cavett, cutting him off. “I thought it was beautiful.”

Re: Back to an Even Bigger Garden: Massive Woodstock Box Set Planned for August

This record company wants $800 for their Woodstock 50th anniversary box set

On August 2, Rhino Records will release a massive box set for the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. Spread across 38 compact discs and 36 hours, “Woodstock - Back to the Garden: The Definitive 50th Anniversary Archive” features almost every note of music performed at the iconic 1969 festival.

The screen-printed plywood box in which the set is packaged contains more than just the music that was performed that weekend half a century ago. It also includes a Blu-ray version of the “Woodstock” documentary, a hardbound copy of the “Woodstock: Three Days of Peace and Music” book by original promoter Michael Lang, as well as posters, prints, a guitar strap and other memorabilia.

A set this comprehensive is likely to be the last word on the legendary rock festival, and indeed, it’s hard to imagine that any detail has been overlooked. Still, one possible sticking point remains – the price. The set sells for $800, and it’s worth wondering if sticker shock might be a potential obstacle to selling all 1,969 copies that have been pressed.

Mara Kuge, president and founder of Superior Music Publishing, said that while the price is steep, the customer for this box can likely afford it.

Re: Back to an Even Bigger Garden: Massive Woodstock Box Set Planned for August

The Triumph and Tragedy of Woodstock’s Forgotten Album Producer

Eric Blackstead oversaw one of the most iconic rock albums of all time before dying alone and destitute in 2015. Now his friends want to scatter his ashes in Bethel, New York and keep his legacy alive

Fifty years after the original Woodstock festival took place, mementos of the event are scattered across the country. Jimi Hendrix’s guitar is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; Wavy Gravy’s sleeping bag is housed at the Fur Peace Ranch in Ohio (owned by former Jefferson Airplane guitarist Jorma Kaukonen). Jack Casady’s bass, Johnny Winter’s chain necklace and the original plans for the location can be found at a museum on the site of the festival in Bethel, New York.

Then there’s the white cardboard box, slightly larger than a shoebox, that rests atop a used hard drive in a living room in northern New Jersey. Labeled “Cremation No. 35064,” it contains the remains of one of the most important and yet most forgotten players in the enduring Woodstock saga.

Woodstock Remembered: Bob Weir on Why the Fest Mattered to the Grateful Dead

“The significance for me was that the new music that was evolving during the previous years had come of age there,” founding member of Grateful Dead says

Everybody kept saying it was gonna be huge, but I don’t think anybody really believed that. To the Grateful Dead, it sounded a bit like pressure. You know, “You gotta play well ’cause your career is gonna be made or broken by it.” We also expected a gigantic party, which it certainly was.

Once I got there, I camped out in a tent about half a mile from the stage. I sort of drifted around. It was pretty filthy. It was muddy. And there wasn’t enough food or facilities. If it had gone on for a month, it would have looked like a summer version of Valley Forge. On the other hand, everybody was pretty much into it. As long as they were there, they were gonna make the most of it.

Woodstock Remembered: Robbie Robertson on Feeling ‘Proud’ to Be Part of the Legendary Fest

The Band thought the whole idea of the Woodstock festival was exciting because of what it stood for. The promoters were telling everybody that it was a show of hands for people who felt a certain way about our generation and the war in Vietnam. It was being called a festival of peace and love and music. It was being touted in this kind of way, which was very nice.

But when we flew in and saw the mass of people sitting on the side of the hill, it was a frightful sight. It was like an army. There were two ways to look at this thing. There was the serious political side, which was kind of beautiful in that everybody wanted to join together like this; it was a very warm feeling. And then there was the other side, which was kind of frightening — this ripped army of mud people out there. People were saying, “Isn’t this beautiful?” And it was beautiful. But it was also very swampy.

Graham Nash on Woodstock: ‘It Was Both Primeval and Futuristic’

It was only CSNY’s second gig, and they were playing to a crowd of 400,000

We were in New York City with Joni Mitchell, and Elliot Roberts [who managed both CSNY and Mitchell] decided that Joni shouldn’t go to Woodstock because she was also scheduled to do The Dick Cavett Show on TV. It’s one of the great credits to her as an artist that she was able to write the song “Woodstock” without having been there. Of course, when you’ve got all these people babbling at you about what happened, I guess it’s pretty infectious.

And it was overwhelming! It was like Blade Runner, like looking down on L.A. in the year 2050. It was both primeval and futuristic. And there was a hell of an energy emanating from it. Coming in to land, something went wrong with the rudder of my helicopter, so we came down very heavily, and that was scary. When we got out of the helicopter, we were greeted by John Sebastian. We lit up one and had a party in Sebastian’s tent. He was wearing what later became his uniform, tie-dyed long johns and pants, and there was mud halfway up his legs. He was there for the entire three days, so he told us graphic stories about the rain and mud.
