1964 Rock guitarist Vinnie Moore (of UFO) is born in New Castle, Delaware.

1980 A New Jersey State assemblyman introduces a resolution to make Bruce Springsteen's "Born To Run" the official state song of New Jersey.

1980 Judas Priest release British Steel, a metal landmark containing the tracks "Living After Midnight" and "Breaking the Law."

1980 Iron Maiden release their self-titled debut album.

2016 At the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Prince plays his last concert, as he dies a week later. His last song is "Purple Rain."

1996 The rest of Jerry Garcia's ashes were scattered near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. A small portion had been placed into the Ganges River in India 11 days earlier. The Grateful Dead leader had died on August 9th, 1995.

2001 Joey Ramone, of the '70s punk band The Ramones, died of lymphatic cancer at the age of 49 . His real name was Jeff Hyman.

1948 UFO frontman Phil Mogg is born in Wood Green, London.

1966 The Rolling Stones release Aftermath.

1968 Alt-rock guitarist Ed O'Brien (of Radiohead) is born in Oxford, England.

1974 Lynyrd Skynyrd releases their second album, Second Helping.

1982 Anvil release their sophomore album, Metal on Metal. Produced by Chris Tsangarides, the album spawns the anthemic title track, which instantly becomes an Anvil concert standard.

1947 Rock singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty (of Stealers Wheel) is born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland.

1983 Felix Pappalardi, producer and bass player with American rock band Mountain was shot dead by his wife Gail Collins during a jealous rage. Collins was convicted of criminally negligent homicide and sentenced to four years in prison. Pappalardi who was 43 had produced the Cream albums 'Disraeli Gears' and 'Wheels of Fire.'

1998 Linda McCartney died after a long battle against cancer. Married Paul McCartney in 1969 when she was working as a photographer. As well as a being a member of Wings, she became an animal rights campaigner and launched her own brand of vegetarian food.

2008 Danny Federici, the longtime keyboard player for Bruce Springsteen and a member of The E Street Band, died of cancer at the age of 58. Federici had worked with Springsteen for over 40 years, starting with Steel Mill and Child with Springsteen.

2012 Levon Helm, died of throat cancer aged 71. A drummer, singer and multi-instrumentalist, Helm formed his own high school band, the Jungle Bush Beaters, at 17, he later joined The Hawks (who became Bob Dylan's backing group) who then became known as The Band. He sang on Band classics like 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,' 'Up on Cripple Creek,' 'Rag Mama Rag,' and 'The Weight.'

1947 Mark Volman (of The Turtles, Flo and Eddie, Mothers of Invention) is born in Los Angeles, California.

1953 Rock drummer Rod Morgenstein (of Winger) is born in New York.

2002 Alice In Chains lead singer Layne Staley is discovered dead in his Seattle apartment after police break down his door to investigate reports that he is missing. Staley, whose addictions led him to cut off contact with friends and family, had died on April 5 of a drug overdose. He was 34.
