Re: Woodstock 50th Anniversary Planned

Good grief. Why are they so persistent with this thing? It's been pretty clear for some time now that this is not about baby boomer nostalgia and is instead just a cash grab. But their stubbornness shows just how much cash really is at stake here.

Woodstock anniversary: Bethel Woods site open only to ticket holders on big weekend

Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is warning visitors to steer clear of the area around its property on the weekend of the Woodstock Music and Art Fair’s 50th anniversary.

That is, if they don’t have tickets to any of a number of events planned to celebrate the golden anniversary at the festival’s original Sullivan County site.

The Woodstock Music and Art Fair, which was held Aug. 15-18, 1969, Bethel Woods has a concert scheduled for each of those nights this August, in addition to the special exhibits already on display at the site’s museum.

In preparation for the heavy traffic anticipated that weekend, Bethel Woods is requiring all guest to present a travel pass to enter the traffic area surrounding the property, according to a release from the organization. The center itself is expected to be at full capacity with pre-sold ticket holders, and the organization encourages anyone who wishes to visit to purchase tickets in advance.

Anyone who has tickets to one of the concerts or events will be sent an email detailing how to most easily enter and leave.

Bethel Woods is planning to extend hours for the Museum at Bethel Woods to 9 a.m.-9 p.m. on the weekends of Aug. 10-14, and Aug. 19-25.

The Town of Bethel has been preparing for an influx of visitors for the weekend. While officials could not estimate how many visitors are expected, the 25th and 30th anniversary weekends in 1994 and 1999, respectively, each attracted around 100,000 people, according to Rick Sauer, commissioner of public safety for Sullivan County.

Law enforcement officials and residents are preparing for the possibility of difficulties, as roads could once again become gridlocked with visitors, who have already sold out area lodging. Town of Bethel Supervisor Daniel Sturm expects to see an “above average” amount of public camping in private yards, which is allowed under local law.

On Aug. 15, Arlo Guthrie will perform on the festival field, 50 years to the day that he played Woodstock. Guthrie's performance will be followed by a screening on the field of the Woodstock documentary, which greatly expanded the Woodstock audience when it was released in 1970. This event is at capacity.

On Aug. 16, Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band will perform at the Bethel Woods pavilion. Neither Starr nor any of his Beatle bandmates performed at Woodstock, but the drummer and vocalist has played Bethel Woods previously. Woodstock veterans Edgar Winter and Blood, Sweat and Tears are also performing that night.

On Aug. 17, Carlos Santana will return to Bethel for a show that will feature the Doobie Brothers as the opening act. Santana is well-known for his show-stopping performance at Woodstock in 1969, and he has over the last 50 years remained closely linked with the famous festival.

John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival fame will perform at Bethel Woods on Aug. 18. The Tedeschi Trucks Band and Grace Potter are also on the bill.

Woodstock 50 is denied permit yet again

It looks like there will be no Woodstock 50 concert at Vernon Downs this year — or possibly anywhere at all — after the town voted unanimously on Tuesday night to uphold its application denial.

Organizers released a statement after the decision, thanking everyone who supported them in recent weeks as it pushed to have the anniversary event moved to the upstate race track.

“Woodstock 50 is disappointed that the Town of Vernon has passed up the opportunity to hold the historic 50th Anniversary Festival by denying our robust and thoughtful proposal,” the statement said. “We regret that those in Vernon who supported Woodstock have been deprived of the once-in-a-lifetime chance to be part of the rebirth of a cultural peace movement that changed the world in 1969 and is what the world needs now. We want to thank the artists who stood by us. We are grateful for the support of Vernon Downs and its generous owner Jeffrey Gural.”

The rejection marks the third time in two weeks that Woodstock 50 has been denied — with the latest coming from the Vernon Planning Board.

Virgin Produced, the company that had been backing the festival and advising with the Woodstock team, announced that it would be pulling out as a result.

“[Virgin Produced] has officially concluded its consulting role with respect to the company and the proposed festival,” it said in a statement to Pollstar magazine. “Given that the attempt to secure permits with the Town of Vernon, NY and related state agencies has been finally denied, Virgin Produced has concluded its advisory mandate and terminated its services agreement. Virgin Produced, and its CEO Jason Felts, wish Woodstock all the best in its future endeavors.”

1970 Woodstock Documentary Will Head to Theaters for One Night Only

Woodstock: The Director’s Cut will play in theaters nationwide on August 15th — the legendary festival’s 50th anniversary

The upcoming 50th anniversary of Woodstock has been somewhat complicated. There’s a high percentage that Michael Lang’s festival might not happen (if you’re David Crosby, you’re almost certain of it). Thankfully, the original festival’s 1970 documentary will hit theaters nationwide for one night only, where it’s possible to celebrate the anniversary in the comfort of a soda-soaked theater chair. Woodstock: The Director’s Cut will screen on August 15th at 7:00 pm local time.

Directed by Michael Wadleigh, this is the first nationwide screening since the film was originally released. The director’s cut stretches out to three hours and 44 minutes and includes legendary performances by Janis Joplin and the Jefferson Airplane that weren’t featured in the original. Other artists includes Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, the Who, Santana, Canned Heat and Jimi Hendrix — who famously closed the festival after a searing rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner.”

“Both as a documentary and as a pop-culture phenomenon, ‘Woodstock’ is a milestone, a pivotal moment in history captured forever, proving the enduring power of cinema,” CEO of Fathom Events Ray Nutt said in a statement. “50 years later, there has never been anything quite like it.”

Woodstock 50: How the golden anniversary festival went off track

"You just can't do these things overnight anymore," said one music historian.

When the organizers of Woodstock's 50th anniversary festival put the rock band Hollis Brown on the lineup, lead singer Mike Montali was elated.

"It's such an iconic and legendary thing, man," Montali said, referring to the paisley-printed, mud-splattered 1969 original. "For us, a couple of guys who started our band in a garage in Queens a few years ago, getting on the bill of a Woodstock festival was a huge achievement. It was a dream come true."

But now, less than a month before Woodstock 50 is scheduled to begin, the event is in doubt, plagued by a series of behind-the-scenes money headaches and legal setbacks.

The music acts they already have lined up have next to nothing to do with the original's. The one thing this event has going for it is that it's (or was) suppose to take place outdoors like the original Woodstock.

Taking it indoors completely wipes out what little Woodstock influence this thing once had. At that point they may as well call it something completely different. Not being offensive, but that's how I feel about this whole damn sham of an "anniversary".

Woodstock 50 denied: Town says safety plan 'worthless,' putting festival in doubt

With less than a month until it is scheduled to begin, Woodstock 50 is spiraling deeper into doubt as the drama and controversy that have surrounded the festival for months continue to escalate.

The town of Vernon, New York, on Monday rejected for the fourth time in two weeks an application — with a safety plan deemed "worthless" by one official — submitted by organizers in hopes of staging a 50th anniversary Woodstock concert Aug. 16-18 at Vernon Downs, west of Utica.

Safety and capacity — two issues that dogged the historic Woodstock festival in 1969 — figure prominently in the denial letter issued by Town of Vernon Code Enforcement Officer Reay Walker in response to the most recent application submitted July 17.
