I truly think the only people who could answer that with any degree of knowledge would be his band mates and Manzarek is dead so maybe Krieger and Densmore might have a go.

LA Woman was a very good record...so based on that he and The Doors certainly could have had more good music in them.
Morrison probably went to Paris because he was into both prose and poetry and saw it as a refuge for writers as many others did in the early 20th century. He most likely wanted to capture that old Bohemian vibe but sadly he was also into alcohol and drugs.
