Let There Be More Light: Pink Floyd Announces Massive Box Set Tracing Band’s Early Ye

Let There Be More Light: Pink Floyd Announces Massive Box Set Tracing Band’s Early Years

Back in May we told you about Pink Floyd’s vinyl reissue campaign for this year. At the time, there was no word on any further CD reissues. But all that changed this morning when word came out about what may be the most expansive Pink Floyd project yet: the 27-disc The Early Years 1965-1972. Due to be released on November 11 from Pink Floyd Records/Sony, the set contains 6 CD/DVD or Blu-ray book-style packages (which will be released separately) and a 7th “Extra” CD/DVD or Blu-ray package exclusive to the box. A 2-CD highlight set The Early Years – CRE/ATION will also be available the same day.

The box contains 130 audio tracks running over 12 hours, and over 15 hours of video. There are 20 unreleased songs including 7 hours of unreleased live material. Five 7″ replica vinyl singles are also included.

The set promises to trace Pink Floyd’s journey from its founding in 1965 through their early singles and first seven studio albums (plus soundtracks) up until The Dark Side of The Moon. This package seems to be similar in content to the Immersion box sets the band released for three of their albums (The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall) but this time covering a whole series of albums.

Much as I love Pink Floyd, the early years were very hit and miss, and an outlay of £378 means I wont be going anywhere near it.

I might get the Creation cd though.

I notice it has gone down to £376. I'll have to keep an eye on it.

I like it, and a reminder that Obscured By Clouds was a really good album. Haven't played it for ages, but I must dig it out again.

Pink Floyd's Nick Mason dissects mammoth 'Early Years 1965-1972' box set

Pink Floyd’s mammoth new box set isn’t just an exercise in nostalgia — it’s exercise equipment, according to Nick Mason.

“It’s a fitness test,” chuckles the 72-year-old Pink Floyd drummer down the line from London in an exclusive interview with Postmedia Network. “If you can carry it around and carry it up and down stairs, you’ll find it does you a world of good. It’s a cardiovascular workout in a box … sort of a health thing, really. Like granola, but bigger.”

That's a great, and funny, interview with Nick. I still wont be getting the full box set though.

Well I saw on iTunes there's also what I assume is either a rarities or best-of-the-box companion album called Creation. So that could be something worthwhile for Floyd fans who don't want to hoist that enormous price.

Me, I don't see anything there that really piques my interest. Lots of absolutely amazing songs from that period, but I have them all already. They should have released a bunch of live shows.

Pink Floyd To Release Individual Early Years Editions

Last November, Pink Floyd released the ambitious 38 disc box set The Early Years 1965-1972, a treasure trove of previously unreleased material from the first seven years of the band’s career. The band part was that it was almost $500 on Amazon.

On March 24, the band will release The Early Years, 1965 – 1972: The Individual Volumes, breaking the set into six individual volumes highlighting a specific portion of those years.
