Question Vote for Your Favourite Garage Rock Tracks!

Vote for however many garage rock hits you want.

Post your other favourites below. That way we can all squabble over whether they truly fit the definition of garage rock.

Re: Vote for Your Favourite Garage Rock Tracks!

I really don't know the definition of "garage rock" and I've never seen a good enough explanation that made me say "oh yeah, that makes sense".

So, I simply voted for a few of my faves on the list.

Re: Vote for Your Favourite Garage Rock Tracks!

Here are mine:
Blue Cheer - Summertime Blues
Easy Beats - Friday on My Mind
Kingsmen - Louie Louie
Kinks - All Day and All of the NIght
Kinks - You Really Got Me
Spencer Davis Group - Gimme Some Lovin'
Steppenwolf - Born to Be Wild
Strawberry Alarm Clock - Incense & Peppermints
Troggs - Wild Thing
Yardbirds - For Your Love
Zombies - She's Not There

None of those i'd really consider garage rock. But the roots are certainly there. To me, Garage Rock is pretty much interchangable with proto-punk (another amiguous subgenre) what springs to mind is later bands like The Stooges, MC5, early Alice Cooper (when it was the band and not just one man) etc.

But there's some influence there. The Kingsmen and The Kinks laid a lot of the foundations. I always thout The Kingsmen sounded a lot like The Kinks (their singer sounds a lot like Ray Davies. Anyone agree?) but most of that list I just think of as normal British Invasion type stuff (even the not-quite British Easybeats. A group of British immigrants and one dutchman formed in Australia.)

And Incense and Peppermints doesn't seem Garage Rock at all to me.

But each to their own.

Re: Vote for Your Favourite Garage Rock Tracks!

Went with the two Kinks songs, Steppenwolf, "For Your Love," and "She's Not There" (Even though, honestly, I prefer Santana's version).

Music Note Re: Vote for Your Favourite Garage Rock Tracks!

What really surprises me is that quite a few tunes that I thought were very popular have only one or two votes so far. Maybe Garage Rock doesn't have the breadth of appeal that I thought it did on this board.

Re: Vote for Your Favourite Garage Rock Tracks!

One of these days I'll learn to read the whole thing before I vote. I picked just one: Born to be wild (by far the best of the bunch to my taste).

Blue Cheer - 7 votes
Count Five - 3 votes

This ought to tell you all you need to know. On any board where garage rock were truly appreciated, those results would be reversed.

Foxhound & Troggy:

I have a few points to make ~

I think that giving poll voters unlimited options will not give you a true idea of which songs are "better liked" as some posters will vote for only one (either because they mis-read the poll or by choice) and others will vote for different numbers of songs. I don't see how one can come up with a "fair" idea of what is really liked in polls where there is not a set number of votes.

Also, many of us do NOT have unlimited time to ponder choices and will quickly go for the songs that are familiar or better remembered and are not necessarily thinking of "garage rock."

Plus ... Foxhound, many people are not voting because they are either your enemies or are downwind of you ... I think that if you used deodorant from time to time .. more people will vote in your poll.

True but only three people out of 19 voting for "Psychotic Reaction", when you can vote for as many songs as you want, tells you at least a little bit. Most of the really garagey tracks on the list ("Pushin' Too Hard", "Gloria") don't have many votes.

Maybe but a few folks also might not vote for something they don't consider garage rock. I think that balances out a little.

Re: Vote for Your Favourite Garage Rock Tracks!

I don't know I thought the majority of those songs were "pop tunes" and some others "hard rock" but went with the Standell's, Count Five, ?/Mysterians and Shadows Of Night as my garage favorites.

Nonsense. You're just trying to blame others for the deficiencies of your favourite artists. Either that or you're trying to cook the results of your own poll. But try some deodorant anyway.
