I'd argue that it's indeed as much as specific style or sound as it is what you describe above. Lots of bands released some records that were garage rock and some records that weren't.

But just where would the cut-off be for this? Could you make the call just by hearing a song or would you have to know who the band is?

For the most part, I'd agree. But you have to remember that the Beatles were also hugely popular in other places too, like Australia and Japan. What would you call it in those countries?

Besides, who could I have left out of my poll? Bands such as Chad Allen & the Expressions, Pretty Things, Cannibal & the Headhunters, Seeds, Them and the Ugly Ducklings just had to be in a Garage Rock poll even though they have not drawn many votes. I had an enormously difficult time just trying to pare my list down to forty tracks without making room for any Beatles, Stones etc. tracks.

But that definition is incapable of dealing with the fairly common situation of bands improving over time. If you say that the band was Garage only up to a certain point in time, you in effect embrace my definition of evaluating Garage rock by specific track, not by band.

But few were the bands that had record contracts in the sixties! Any band that cut a Billboard hit was then "professional"! I would have had no list at all if I had to abide by that part of your definition.
This is admittedly all very arbitrary. As I see it, success for most garage bands was defined as being a one hit wonder on regional radio. A relative handful made the national charts. These groups didn't improve with time. And if they did, they evolved out of garage rock as soon as they were successful and no longer practiced in the garage. Like maybe Paul Revere and the Raiders.

In the wake of the British Invasion I remember two kids who played in our junior high talent show qualified as garage band members. One played in The Rationals ("I Need You," "Respect). The other eventually played in Brownsville Station ("Smokin' in the Boysroom"). A third kid who I don't remember playing in the talent shows ended up being bigger than either of them. He was in the Stooges.

The Amboy Dukes, Bob Seger and the Last Herd and Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels were also playing in the area but no one would have considered them garage bands. They were stars.

1. Making the cut-off by sound or band is a tough question. Let me use two examples of great songs that aren't on the list but probably should be. If I was only listening, I'd say that both "Hang on Sloopy" and "She's About a Mover" would qualify. But if you take into account the musicians, the McCoys probably qualify and Doug Sahm wouldn't. What do you think?

2. Was there garage rock in Australia and Japan? If the same dynamic was in play, I don't think it would have to be America only. But I see the dynamic in Britain a little different. The Beatles opened the door for a lot of already talented British musicians to walk through. They were originally inspired by Lonnie Donegan years earlier. But maybe Freddy and the Dreamers were a garage band...

So sad that I just couldn't make the space for those two. I could have easily used fifty poll options.

Question Re: Vote for Your Favourite Garage Rock Tracks!

Consider this ~

"Little Steven" Van Zandt is considered to be the expert on "garage rock" ...

He loves to play
on his show. So.... what does this say about "garage rock"?

Little Steven admittedly plays lots of non-garage on his show.

I'd call them both garage, in fact "She's About A Mover" moreso than "Hang On Sloopy".

Lots of it, especially in Australia. There was a lot of beat music in places like Holland.

Re: Vote for Your Favourite Garage Rock Tracks!

There was a scene in Japan in the late-60's called New Sounds. It was kind of Garage/Psychadelic.

Re: Vote for Your Favourite Garage Rock Tracks!

I voted for them all...great list!

You should of added some early Rolling Stones (63-65) they were one of the biggest reasons Garage Rock was the craze in the mid 60's. And The Beatles and Animals too.

Cool list.

But I only had forty slots! I didn't want to drop any of the lesser known bands when the Stones, Beatles and Animals get enough attention as it is. Besides you can vote for all the Stones tracks that you want here in my other poll:

The two entries by Canadian bands are bringing up the rear in this poll. Yet they're great tunes!

Did these tracks not receive much airplay outside of Canada in your neck of the woods?

"Shakin' All Over" was a hit but credited to The Guess Who in the States.

These are just the hits.

To dig deeper on garage rock, check out compilations like Back From The Grave, Pebbles, Teeange Shutdown, Highs In the Mid 60'sand the like for obscure to downright unknown garage rockers
