Is rock in good shape today? Simple yes or no.

I know this is beyond redundant, but I just want to know where everybody stands on this subject.

To make things a little bit easier, I'll add a 'maybe' option.

Re: Is rock in good shape today? Simple yes or no.

I chose 'Yes'

The overall sound has definitely changed, but in a way, there are more options than ever. Personally, I just have a hard time sorting through it all.

A few bands I listen to from now days:

Tame Impala
Phoenix
Swans (80s band that just went through a huge revival)
Grizzly Bear
Porcupine Tree
Muse
Daft Punk
Jack White Post-White Stripes

Obviously, none of these are going to replace The Beatles or Pink Floyd but they're still great to listen to.

Long as Neil Young and Tom Petty are still recording, rock is in its golden age.

Re: Is rock in good shape today? Simple yes or no.

I had to say no. Of bands who appeared in the last 20 years, there are only 4 that I've bought all their discs. Dada, The Connells, The Lemonheads, and Blues Traveler. Lots of mundane stuff out there. Maybe I'm turning into an old gezzer.

BeatlesFan3287 who is in his 20's obviosly thinks they are a form of rock proving the modern day music fan has a broader definition of rock just like we did in the 70's and 80's.

also realize the guys in daft punk started in an alternative rock band called Darlin' along with the lead guy in the band Phoenix. Their influences were the Beach Boys, The Stooges, MC5 and The Rolling Stones.

Yeah...I agree. Daft Punk has a persistent back beat within the song form. They just happened to be more synthesized than the average rock group. I also consider Depeche Mode and to be rock, especially considering they were originally going to use guitars but decided on cheaper keyboard instruments.

The main genres I don't like now day's are pop-rap, watered down teen pop (Miley, Britney, etc), and extreme forms of metal (death and black metal) Everything else is fair game to me. It wasn't always like that. I use to equate everything that was new with garbage too, but not anymore.

If it was in "good shape' we would not be having this debate it would be obvious.

Funny, but my young (well sort of) Polish sales assistant listens to a soft rock station at the office. I keep telling her that the dance-pop music (Beyoncé etc.) to which she listens is watered down gangsta rap for middle class white women who like rap/hiphop but are intimidated by inner city black culture. She always looks annoyed/aggrieved when I say that.
