Exclamation Re: Canned Heat vs. Vanilla Fudge!

Interesting that both bands got off on the wrong foot for me and it took me some time before I learned to appreciate them.

Canned Heat's first two singles, On the Road Again and Going Up Country, left me with the impression that they were just another of the experimental West Coast country-folk bands though not among the best ones. I didn't learn that they were actually a very good blues-rock band until I saw them live in concert at the University of Western Ontario in 1971 or 1972.

I didn't like either the original You Keep Me Hangin' On by the Supremes and I liked Vanilla Fudge's cover even less. But then Season of the Witch got a lot of airplay on progressive rock radio programs in the late 1960's and I sat up and listened. It was their rendition of Some Velvet Morning though that really made me a fan. Vanilla Fudge performed Some Velvet Morning on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1969 while I watched together with my very old school father. He stayed uncharacteristically silent with nary a sneer as he watched them play. He must have realized that he was actually watching four very talented musicians.

I'm therefore going with Vanilla Fudge in this one on the strength of Some Velvet Morning.
