Never knew Split Enz got their start back in 1972. Love to hear some of the early stuff. Anything you could recommend ?

There first recorded album was Mental Notes (1975), which I can strongly recommend. Phil Judd, who painted the album's cover, was a mad genius. Here's that album's music:

"Under the Wheel" starts around 5:30 of the full album and is worth a listen though the vocal is a bit cracked; the opener "Walking Down the Road" is a little more standard. Prog rock meets art rock.

Chris Woodstra, Rovi: The first proper Split Enz album features the band at its eccentric best. Mental Notes is completely noncommercial art rock filled with ambitious arrangements and slightly disturbing themes courtesy of the Phil Judd and Tim Finn songwriting partnership. Finn's bittersweet crooning perfectly complements Judd's madman persona on tracks like "Stranger Than Fiction." Although the album would be repackaged, renamed, and re-recorded in years to come, the band would never again produce anything like it.
