Not much has changed over the centuries, these poor souls depicted in this song were packed off to Van Demons land for simply speaking out...

![]() Here from when folk began to make real inroads onto the pop charts in the early 1960's are the three folk songs that I'd term quintessential in the sense that they best encapsulated the genre:
Greenfields - Brothers Four (1960) Where Have All the Flowers Gone? - Kingston Trio (1961) Blowin' in the Wind - Peter, Paul & Mary (1963) They were so well done that you could say they were state of the art when it came to folk music in the early 1960's before the revolution in pop music began. ![]()

Re: Folky Faves!
This folk hero from Ontario is a mean drummer also, I reckon I heard Peter, Paul and Mary's version first... then as a youth I grew to appreciate this and his work.

What could be better... than a Cajun cover of a Dylan tune... in French!
Rick Grech and Family covered it too (?) FAIRPORT CONVENTION - Si Tu Dois Partir. From an absolute classic album ( Unhalfbricking.) |

![]() These two from 1958 were the first two folk tunes to capture my attention on the kitchen radio when I was just starting primary school:

Re: Folky Faves!
Those Transatlantic sampler albums allowed access to folk at half the price... this coupled as a 1969 TV theme.
Pentangle - Light Flight. Jacqui McShee was the ultimate anti diva.. just got on with singing folk! (look out for, Peter Greene, stage right, rear.) Pentangle - Travelling Song. |
