Woodstock 50 Will Be Free … If It Happens

A rep for the venue says that the festival organizers still have yet to present them with a lineup

The beleaguered official 50th anniversary tribute concert to Woodstock will be free, if it moves forward. A rep for the festival told the Washington, D.C. radio station WTOP that if it’s able to pull off the supposedly three-day event, still aiming to kick off in a little over two weeks, it would make tens of thousands of tickets complimentary.

Woodstock ’69 Vet Country Joe McDonald Leaps Off ‘Sinking Ship’ Woodstock 50

The Lovin’ Spoonful founder John Sebastian also drops out as organizers attempt relocation to Maryland’s Merriweather Post Pavilion

Country Joe McDonald and former Lovin’ Spoonful frontman John Sebastian will no longer play the beleaguered Woodstock 50, five decades after both musicians performed at the original 1969 festival. The songwriters were originally attached to the event, once set for August 16th through 18th near the original site in upstate New York, but have confirmed they won’t participate if organizers successfully re-stage the fest next month at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland.

McDonald told The Baltimore Sun that he hasn’t heard from the promoters in weeks and isn’t interested in playing the event, particularly given its lack of solid details and attempted late-date move. He added that his contract only called for him to play the original Woodstock 50 site in Watkins Glen, New York.

“I have no airfare booked,” he said. “I have no hotels. I have nothing planned. I’m not interested in getting on a ship that’s sinking, and I don’t see any indication that this ship is not sinking.”

The Raconteurs Drop Out of Woodstock 50 as Maryland Still Awaits Permit Application

Band follows Dead & Company, Jay-Z, John Fogerty and others as latest high-profile act to ditch beleaguered fest

UPDATE: Following the departure of the Raconteurs, a rep for the Lumineers confirmed to Rolling Stone that the Denver folk-rock band will also not be performing at Woodstock 50. Carlos Santana, who has a show booked at nearby Jiffy Lube Arena in Bristow, VA on August 14th, will also not be performing. “Carlos is definitively not playing Merriwether Post Pavilion and has added his name to those who will not be appearing,” Santana’s rep tells Rolling Stone. “We can’t come back and do a free show two days after a paid show. Go buy a ticket to the Supernatural show!”

Miley Cyrus Pulls Out of Woodstock 50

It’s been a tough 24 hours for Woodstock 50: Headliner Miley Cyrus has pulled out of the festival, a source close to the situation tells Variety, joining the Raconteurs, the Lumineers and original Woodstock 1969 performers John Sebastian and Country Joe McDonald, all of whom since last night have said publicly that they’re not performing. Earlier, headliners Jay-Z and the Dead & Co., as well as John Fogerty, confirmed that they will not be performing.
